NISHOTH WHITE – DESI JADI BUTI – Nishoth Safed is known commonly as turpeth, fue vao, and St. Thomas lidpod. It is a perennial herbaceous, hairy vine growing 4 to 5 meters in length, endemic to India. It is commonly found in North Circars and Deccan region up to 3000 ft.
The leaves are alternate, very variable in shape, ovate, oblong, and truncate or cordate at the base. The flowers are large, with axillaries, and solitary. Fruit is a capsule with conspicuously enlarged sepals and thickened pedicles.
Nishoth Safed is commonly used for centuries in the Ayurvedic system of Medicine to treat fevers, edema, ascites, anorexia, constipation, hepatosplenomegaly, intoxication, hemorrhoids, fistula, anemia, obesity, abdominal tumors, ulcers/wounds, worm infestation, pruritus, and other skin disorders.
It is the best among the herbs used for Virechana (i.e. therapeutic purgation), one of the procedures of Ayurvedic Panchakarma therapy.
